the spy who loved (to drive) me (crazy) by [archiveofourown.org profile] dollsome (ASOIAF/GoT, Jaime/Brienne)
In which Jaime and Brienne are spies infiltrating a swanky black tie soiree, and desperate times call for desperate measures. And kissing.

I almost didn't read this, because my preferred flavour of AU with ASOIAF is canon divergence. But I would have missed out, because this is fantastic. Oh, Jaime, your not remotely secret feelings about Brienne will never not be endearing in any context.

The Princesses and the Penis Symbol by [archiveofourown.org profile] sophinisba (Merlin, Morgana/Vivian)
Morgana decides to marry a princess and get the hell out of Camelot.

What can I say? I'm always saying how I want Morgana to get the hell out of Camelot and find some nice princessly type to serve, and Vivian is my princess of choice. Perfect ficlet with a perfect title.
netgirl_y2k: (Catelyn)
You know what I miss? Those little individual kudos notifications, that would sometimes pop up when you were doing something else and add a little yay! to an otherwise blah day.

I mean, I get that there are reasons, and the digest is nice too. I just... miss them.

I've spend the last week, because I discovered that two episodes back-to-back made for fantastic bedtime telly, watching The Legend of Korra.

I spent the first half of the series thinking: Well, this is fun, but it's not as good as Avatar. Then again, A:tLA is a weird show in that you can be sitting watching an episode of Avatar, especially some of the early ones, while thinking, yeah, this is nice but it's not as good as Avatar.

But round about the halfway mark it really picked up, and I had a hard time restricted myself to two episodes before bed. Anyway, non-spoilery reactions:

-I am now a fully paid up member of the Lin Bei Fong is awesome fanclub.

-I am presuming that somewhere on the internet, Korra/Asami is a thing that exists?

-Bolin is the bestest.

Fic rec: Crossing the River (ASOIAF, Catelyn Stark) by [archiveofourown.org profile] smirnoffmule You may be tempted to skip this because the pairing is tagged Catelyn Stark/Walder Frey, which is, yes, repulsive on a cellular level. But it's not a ship fic. What it is, is a remarkably clever and well thought out AU where Walder Frey demands a different price for letting Robb's army pass, Cat reunites with her daughters and is generally awesome, and Walder Frey gets what he deserves. 'tis brilliant.
netgirl_y2k: (Morgana Drunk)
Fic Rec: Not Quite a Five-Star Getaway (The Church of Mad Love Remix) by [personal profile] fitz_y (Merlin; Morgana/Morgause) which is a remix of a modern AU I wrote ages ago, although this one is better. You know how I'm always saying that there should be the sort of gleefully ridiculous AUs about the girls of Merlin as there are about the boys. Well, this is it. Also, Morgause totally would have read Machiavelli when she was a teenager.

*

Speaking of remixes, I accidentally wrote another couple of mini-ones.

Ever After (the bit player remix) (ASOIAF; Sansa Stark, various characters; 1172 words)
If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.

Queen of Air and Darkness (the art of siegecraft remix) (Merlin; Morgana; 407 words)
Morgana is called the Cruel Healer, Lady Death, the Queen of Air and Darkness.
netgirl_y2k: (Idris!TARDIS)
So, Remix happened. And you know how I was saying that I hadn't been reading much Classic Who fic recently, and that was sad. Well, my remixer chose one of my older fics about the Brigadier and Liz Shaw galavanting around the universe with the Third Doctor, and the result was lovely.

Five Things Alistair Learned While Traveling (Memento Temporis Radio Edit) (Doctor Who; the Brig, Liz Shaw, Three) Charming and wonderful, with the sort of dry wit that works so well with Brig fic.

And speaking of cruising on a wave of Classic Who nostalgia.

Gearbox (The Won't Miss a Piece Remix) (Doctor Who; loads of Classic Who Doctors and Companions, but mostly Seven & Ace) I am a sucker for fics about the Doctor learning from his companions, in this case learning how the box works. Also, there's a room full of angry mechanical ducks aboard the TARDIS, of course there is.

I was delighted to see an ASOIAF remix, and such a lovely one too.

Come the Morning (The Once More for the Ages Remix) (Cat/Ned) Perfect, Perfect Cat voice.

I saw that [personal profile] selenak though I might have written this one. I didn't, but it is however everything I could ever have wanted in a Merlin fic.

Waking Up Stories (A Dancemix with Dragons) (Merlin; Morgana, Aithusa) Morgana & the baby dragon escaping doomed narratives and going off to make something new and different, I mean there's lots of other good stuff in there, the Morgana characterisation is spectacular, but basically that.

Remix Madness happened too. And I did mean to write something for it, really I did. Instead, I did what I always do when faced with a variety of choices, which is curl up into a ball and not do anything. But some lovely person made a ficlet out of one of my Discworld fics, I am very charmed.

Not Exactly Human (Eyeballs Remix) (Discworld) In which Quoth the Raven & the Death of Rats have opinions on Susan's taste in women.

The other fic from the Madness collection that immediately leapt out at me as being very good was this DS9 one.

Alter Egos (the twice the woman she used to be remix) (Deep Space Nine; Ezri Dax) I love fics about Ezri learning to be Dax, and this is a wonderful one. I am kind of in awe of whoever managed to turn this around in a week.
netgirl_y2k: (Default)
Firstly, a fic rec: any plans I had for Saturday morning disappeared into reading remember spring swaps snow for leaves by [archiveofourown.org profile] fallingtowers (ASOIAF; Jaime/Brienne; 28k) which is the epic, heartrending, and rich story of what happens to Jaime and Brienne after ADWD, and which gives me all of the Brienne feelings, all of them.

*

Then I came across this post about A sense of disconnection from fandom, and how we deal which was really interesting as it's something that I've thought about a lot having felt increasingly disconnected from fandom for the last couple of years.

And I think, a lot of it is down to me. The way I do fandom hasn't changed, I still use fandom the way I've always used it, to distract me from things I don't want to deal with, but there's a world of difference between reading fic because I don't want to do my psychology coursework, and reading fic because I'm trying not to think about whether I should put my grandmother into a home and how I'll afford it if I do. I mean, that's a lot of pressure to put on some blameless little fic. Also, for a long time, really since souring on Merlin and deciding that I'm pretty much just waiting out Moff Time on Doctor Who, I haven't had a main fandom. The result has been that I've tried to force fannish feeling for things like Being Human and Legend of the Seeker (both of which I love, but not in the fannish way I loved Doctor Who, Merlin, or Buffy back in the old days) that weren't there. And, as with all things in life, when you try to force enthusiasm that isn't there you end up enjoying yourself less. Of course, now I've Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire, a fandom where I'm still in the first, well, second, flush of love, but because most of that fandom takes place so heavily under f-lock it's easy to feel like you're talking to yourself.

But, also, I think fandom generally has changed a bit too. Like it's much less concentrated on LJ/DW than it used to be, and I have a strange reluctance about tumblr. I had one for about a week before I deleted it in a fit of "I don't-- What is-- I don't understand--"

I don't know, maybe I'm just old and crotchety. But I do think the thing is to engage with the parts of fandom you enjoy and ignore the bits you don't.

*

Speaking of, Remix sign ups are happening, and I am torn. I love the idea of remixing and think some of the best fics I've ever written have been remixes, but my two qualifying fandoms are Merlin and Doctor Who, both fandoms where my fannishness depends upon a pretty, er, selective engagement with canon and fandom.

That seven questions meme is doing the rounds again, basically, if you would like questions say so and I will endeavour to provide. Here are some questions [personal profile] mfirefly10 gave me.

Coffee, ASOIAF, and my year as controller of the BBC )
netgirl_y2k: (Bo&Kenzi - friends)
I picked my parents up at the airport last night. I'd sort of been sugarcoating the situation with my grandmother while they were on holiday because I didn't want to cause any unnecessary panic or alarm, but they're back now and I can cause all the panic and alarm my little heart desires.

I suppose I should feel bad for passing the buck so utterly, but at this stage I pretty much need to crawl under a duvet with a good book and listen to Radio 4 for three straight days. But one of the things that's been keeping me sane is that the [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking reveals were this weekend and I, what's the correct term? Oh, yes, made out like a fucking bandit.

--From [livejournal.com profile] weaselett I got some Lost girl icons which was terrific as there are very few situations where Kenzi's face isn't relevant.
--[livejournal.com profile] froggimus_rex recorded a fabulous podfic of my Legend of the Seeker fic The Zombie Dilemma, in which Cara battles zombies and feelings.
--[livejournal.com profile] daystarsearcher wrote me a Romana/Leela drabble of girl kissing and zombies, which are basically my two favourite things.
--My ultimate Doctor Who OTP will always be Donna/her awesome Time Lord brain and [personal profile] paranoidangel wrote me Five Things Donna does with her Time Lord Brain which is fabulous and also has zombies. I just, er, really like zombies.
--Whereas my Being Human OTPs are Annie/her mysterious ghost powers, and THE ENSEMBLE! and [personal profile] glinda wrote me Five places Annie teleported by accident before she got the hang of it (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) which has perfect Annie and her powers and her friends and her giant heart.
--[archiveofourown.org profile] wnb_darklord wrote me 5K (I know) of Ten & Donna fic with werewolves, where Ten turns into a big soppy puppy around Donna. Literally. It's hilarious.
--Oh, and in recent perfect fic is perfect news [personal profile] fitz_y wrote me A Far Far Better Thing 10k (seriously. like. a. bandit) of O'Brien's secret feelings about Cora and snarky friendship with Thomas. It's gorgeous, and subtle, and understated and everything I want from a Downton Abbey fic.

And this wasn't part of [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, but it has my name on it so I'm counting it as a present: [personal profile] sophinisba recorded a gorgeous podfic of [livejournal.com profile] gnimaerd's Merrily on High. Lengthy Merlin femslash podfic? Of one of my favourite fics? Read by my favourite reader? YES PLEASE.

Sometimes I worry about the extent to which I use fandom as an emotional crutch when my life isn't going brilliantly, but what an emotional crutch!

I really wanted to write lots for people, but my life conspired to make sure I spent most of this holiday period gently rattling with stress and crying. So. Sorry. I did manage to finish one thing:

Our History in Cat Years (Merlin; Morgana/Morgause, Aithusa; Reincarnation fic)
Okay, so the talking cat. That probably deserves an explanation.

It's possible I'm a little obsessed with Morgana and her baby dragon. Actually, as I appear to be thinking about Morgana again, I have a theory about her in S4 (I don't have any other theories, I only watched the Morgana bits.) My new headcanon is this: Morgana doesn't especially want to be Queen of Camelot, she hates everything about the place. But she doesn't have a reverse gear, all she can do is keep going in a straight line until it kills her. She's basically a walking death wish at this point. When, really, what she needs is to get the hell out of dodge and find herself a nice queen to serve, she'd be so much happier. Which suddenly explains a lot of my shipping choices for Morgana (Vivian, Elena, Annis, Mithian, etc)

I was thinking about how come I wrote so much less in 2011 than I had in previous years, because God knows I wrote the first two paragraphs of any number of stories that I then deleted in a fit of God, this is awful, why do I even bother? and how this was probably less about writing than it was my total lack of self-esteem or confidence in the last year. (Being better about this is one of my New Year's Resolutions, btw.)

Anyway, this meme was doing the rounds yesterday:

Day One: In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

And I thought it might do me no harm to remind myself that I am occasionally rather good at this. So, the three fics that I think back on and smile, somewhat smugly are:

Her Heart Beat Like a Wolf (A Song of Ice and Fire; Sansa Stark & siblings; PG; 3200 words) All of my feelings about Sansa Stark.
Like a Fish Needs a Bicycle (Merlin; Morgana/various female characters; PG-13; 8900 words) All of my feelings about Morgana.
Walk Softly and Carry a Magic Sword (Legend of the Seeker; Cara/Kahlan; PG; 5500 words) All of my feelings about Cara, and about Cara's feelings for Kahlan.

Um, I don't know what that says about me, other than that I have many feelings about female characters and enjoy telling you about them.

And then day two was:

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

And a few days ago I was putting together a recs list for ASOIAF/GoT for someone, and I thought a few of you might appreciate it too.

8 ASOIAF/GoT fic recs, and a bonus Merlin vid rec )
netgirl_y2k: (winter)
Stress levels: Considered opening that case of banana flavoured beer that's been sitting in the cupboard under the stairs since my housewarming party last year. Didn't.

I still haven't read very many Yuletide fics, but some of what I have read has been lovely.

when the ship comes in (Game of Thrones, Daenerys/Viserys) Oh, Dany. Oh, gorgeous, crazy, doomed Targaryen siblings.

the pretty white ships that I am dreaming of (Warehouse 13, Myka/Helena) Charming Team fic, but mostly I approve of the book-stealing giant squid.

Approval (Vorkosigan Saga, Mark/Kareen) I am endlessly fascinated by Mark, and this is perfect Mark, likeable though even he doesn't know quite why.

Miss Levinson of Cincinnati (Downton Abbey, O'Brien) How O'Brien came to be Cora's lady's maid. I have all the O'Brien feelings anyway, and this is perfect young O'Brien and Cora.

Checking the Horizon (Downton Abbey, Edith, Lavinia) I would watch a show about Edith and Lavinia setting up home in a flat in London. I would watch that show a lot.
netgirl_y2k: (panic)
This Christmas has been an Abomination Unto Nuggan.

Last week my Grandmother was hospitalised with an infection, and they sent her home the day before Christmas Eve. I think they must have been trying to clear the wards for Christmas, because there's no way she should have been released. But by Christmas Day she was seeming much better, better enough that I felt comfortable leaving for a few hours to have dinner and watch Downton Abbey with a girl. And it was all lovely until about midnight when the hospital called to say that the police had found my Gran wandering the streets.

In that moment I aged forty-seven years. My Gran is ninety-three, she's housebound, she hasn't left the house in about five years without a wheelchair and at least three members of the family for moral support. I still for the life can't figure out how it happened. Still. I should have been there.

I suppose, if there is a brightside, it's that my Gran doesn't remember anything about it, and the police found her before she hurt herself or caught pneumonia, and it means she's been readmitted to hospital which is where she should have been all along, as any idiot could have told them.

And while all this is happening I'm the only one here, because everyone else has fucked off on holiday. And my Dad wasn't deigning to check his e-mail or answer his phone. It's funny, it must be a sign of ageing, when I was a teenager and my parents went abroad without me they used to say: We'll call every day (please, don't) We'll e-mail (I won't answer) We'll send you a messenger pigeon (Mu-um, please get on the plane.) Now that I'm older, I don't hear from them for a week and I go: Oh God, they've died, they've actually gone and died on me, the bastards.

Anyway. My Gran's in the best place, and it transpires that my parents were just ignoring me. Deep breath in. Deep breath out. Hide in fandom. That's a plan.

I haven't read many Yuletide fics because of, you know, the giant upsetting nervous breakdown, but what I have read has been spiffing.

Too Many Cooks (Make Out All Over The Kitchen) (Lost Girl, Bo/Lauren) This was very exciting for me because nobody has ever written me a Yuletide Treat before, but it is also totally adorkable. Bo being noble and Lauren being geeky, with cooking and make-outs.

Countdown to the Start (Lost Girl, Bo/Kenzi) Usually I like Bo & Kenzi's friendship, but this fic really works and manages to sell it as a ship, especially with how much Kenzi means to Bo.

Passing-bells (Being Human, Nina/George) Which has a pitch-perfect Nina voice and is everything I ever wanted to read about Nina's werewolf pregnancy.

The Place Where I Belong (Downton Abbey, Sybil/Gwen) Post-S2 fic where Sybil turns up on Gwen's doorstep. Lovely and perfect, with a brilliant cameo from Lord Grantham.

Okay, I've got a couple of hours before visiting so I'm going to listen to some podfic and continue browsing the amazon kindle store. My sister bought herself a selection of presents "from me", then gave me the receipts and told me to reimburse myself the same amount in books and beer. Can I reimburse myself in other things? I asked. Nope, she said, books and beer.

Guys!

netgirl_y2k: (Morgan WTF)
I hate to break it to you, but everyone else has to pack up and go home because I won Yuletide. Seriously, the fic I got is perfect.

Mist (Camelot; Morgan Pendragon; 4000 words)
After Arthur and Leontes fall at the Battle of Bardon Pass, Morgan takes the Crown.

I've worked out why I liked Camelot a lot more than other people seemed to; it was because everyone else was watching Starz Camelot, and I was watching The Morgan Pendragon Show, which was made of flawless and Eva Green. And this fic is everything I loved about Morgan and why I genuinely think she would have made an awesome queen.

Okay, and now I am going out for the traditional Christmas Vietnamese food before coming back to sack out and watch Doctor Who and Downton Abbey. Merry Doctor Who day, everyone!
netgirl_y2k: (Morgana Blue)
For anyone who is feeling sour after Saturday's episode of Merlin (Quick review: it turns out there are worse people in Camelot than Merlin and Gaius, and one of them is king, how very depressing) I highly recommend liberal application of this fic:

And I am done with my graceless heart by [archiveofourown.org profile] dollsome (Merlin; Gwen, Morgana) in which the girls meet after 4x09 and there are feelings, and quiet anger, and talking, and it is perfect.

I've discovered the upside of having a broken bone. "I might give the pub a miss because I think drinking might play silly buggers with my painkillers" sounds so much cooler than "I can't go to the pub because I have to stay in, watch Doctor Who, then discuss it with my internet friends."

*

In perfect fic is perfect news:

The Ivy Crown by [personal profile] briar_pipe (Merlin; Morgana/Gwen, mostly Morgana) 75k of Morgana being the warrior queen of Camelot, I couldn't be more delighted if it turned out that I actually could control the internet with my brain.

I blame [personal profile] fitz_y and my truly impressive painkillers equally for how I can't stop thinking about topless female sword-fighting and the many ways I could possibly make that work in a fic context.

Although, somewhat cheeringly, I got the most brilliant fic for [community profile] femslash11. Remember when I was watching Game of Thrones and said I was shipping Dany and her handmaiden, well I wasn't kidding and now I have a lovely story about them to read.

The Republic of Heaven by [archiveofourown.org profile] lastwingedthing (GoT; Daenerys/Doreah)
It's just the loveliest expansion of Doreah's character, and no book spoilers at all.

Other things I have enjoyed.

a small and graceless child (now grown) by [archiveofourown.org profile] ambyr (Queen's Thief; Helen/Irene)
Every Yuletide I hope that someone will have written an Irene/Helen story expanding on those little hints of backstory and friendship that are dropped here and there, and now someone has, and it is perfect.

Openings by [personal profile] thingswithwings (Deep Space Nine; Kira/Ziyal, Kira/Jadzia, Kira/Keiko, Kira/Intendant)
All the Kira femslash pairings I have ever wanted and a pitch perfect Kira voice, this fic makes me a very happy girl.

The Next Adventure by [personal profile] such_heights (Doctor Who; River Song/Christina de Souza)
This fic is just bursting with fun, charm and dubious legality.

Here is a meme, only if you fancy it, because I have never quite got it into my head that the internet doesn't exist only to entertain me as I sit in of a thursday evening reading a book about carnivorous unicorns. You know, as you do.

I went to see Deathly Hallows part 2 this afternoon, then I borrowed Deathly Hallows part 1 because I'd somehow managed to forget that I hadn't seen it. It might have made more sense to watch them in the right order, but gosh, they were good. Who'd have thought they'd get so good at the beginning? But it's obviously been far too long since I read the books because I remembered exactly none of that.

This is how I celebrate my summer holidays. Next week I may go crazy and go somewhere really exotic, like the library, like the park.

I seem to have accidentally written something for the porn battle, I can't imagine how that happened. Anyway: The Wolf Queen and The Scarred Knight (A Song of Ice and Fire, Sansa/Brienne future fic, for the prompt "perfect knight") Declaration for the wary: I can't write porn for toffee.

*

I bring you a couple of Morgana/Morgause fic recs, which is a pairing I'd always wished got more play in fandom.

First, also from the porn battle: Counterbalance by [personal profile] commoncomitatus Healing lesbian sex up against a tree. Yum. I would like to subscribe to this newsletter, please.

Second, the last prompt I ever left on the Merlin kink meme was Morgana/Morgause, magical lesbian pregnancy, because that silver cloak is fooling precisely no one. I was feeling facetious. And some kind person actually managed to make something lovely and clever out of it. Dynasty by anon.

The Dinosaur Detour by [personal profile] hibernate (Legend of the Seeker) Cara & Kahlan adopt a baby dinosaur, Cara somewhat reluctantly.

All This Nonsense by [personal profile] nostalgia (Doctor Who/Discworld) Eleventy meets Nanny Ogg, and that goes about as well as you'd expect.

I do love it when fandom exactly hits my ideal level of ridiculous.
