That was the episode where the season two budget went to die, right? And I'll tell you what, it was worth every damn penny.
I can only assume that there are a metric fuckton of acting awards winging their way to Lena Headey as we speak, because BLOODY HELL. Her darkly hilarious Cersei Explains it All scenes with Sansa to her Lioness with Cub scene with Tommen. Oh, little King Tommen, I want only good things and kittens for you, I suspect I am doomed to disappointment.
There are EVIL STAGS in the forest. And because that scene was a show addition (good show, show!) I truly thought she was going to go through with it. Give this woman all the acting awards. Invent new awards.
Speaking of people who should be congratulated on their, well, existence. SANSA. Her friendship with Shae needs to continue forever and ever, in fact they need to leave King's Landing with all possible speed and move to a little cottage by the sea, Tyrion can visit. And "of course you'll be in the vanguard" and "I will pray for your return my lord. As I pray for the king's." BOOM. Hopefully S3 will have all the delicious Sansa-Tyrion-(Shae?) interactions.
And, actually, I really liked her scene with the Hound, which I wasn't expecting. The show seems to have removed that weird sexualised vibe from their relationship that was present in the books and which hit every one of my power differential squicks. I found myself almost wishing that she'd accepted his offer to escort her north.
You know, given that I'm supposed to be rooting for the Starks I really should stop being so pleased to see Tywin Lannister, but DAMN, man can make an entrance.
Whoever decided that this episode should be the Battle of Blackwater and nothing else was having a good day at the office, weren't they? Especially after a series that seemed to be floundering a bit under the weight of all the separate stories it needed to tell.
So, next week is the finale, which I'm guess will be the sack of Winterfell, Dany's misadventure in the House of the Undying, and possibly the capture of Jaime and Brienne? And then that's it. What will I get up for on Monday mornings, other than, you know, work.

"Will you?"
"Just as I pray for the king's."
Ohhhh, you better hope that Winter is Coming so you can have some ice for that burn!

Date: 2012-05-29 08:09 pm (UTC)Just thinking about the look on Sansa's face when she realizes who Shae really is breaks my heart.
I need Dany to get back to seducing pretty girls with her dragons and swagger.

Date: 2012-05-29 08:17 pm (UTC)Oh god yes, that was amazing. I love that line. Awards for that line. Awards for Lena, because I honestly thought she was going to go through with it too. There was so much tension and whoever decided, yes, this is the moment where Cersei sits on the Iron Throne which she's never been allowed to do (it's treason!) deserves hugs and cupcakes.
RE: The scene with Sansa and the Hound was great, because of what Sophie brought to that line "You're not afraid of me." She completely inverted their power dynamic with that delivery and sort of retook all her agency in that scene and I LOVE HER FACE SO DEARLY. But yeah that scene and the one with Tyrion makes me think maybe GRRM (since he wrote this episode) ships the Hound/Sansa and Tyrion/Sansa one-sided on the boys part because SANSA IS THE GREATEST, but she isn't gonna want anything to do with either of them. And while I'm wishing for dreams and fairytales, maybe she'll get to CHOOSE who she wants and live happily ever after with someone age appropriate
who rides dragons and has lovely pale hair.I'm not quite sure if I'm going to sacrifice sleep to watch the finale in HD (it comes on quite late and seeing it in HD requires driving to my parents house which is a good bit away), but this episode in HD was oh so pretty so I may just have to.

Date: 2012-05-29 08:51 pm (UTC)I KNOW. The Hound and Tyrion really are the King's Landing branch of the Sansa Stark appreciation society.
GoT airs on a day later here, and basically the entire reason I'm subscribed to that cable channel is so that I can watch it in HD, on the big screen, lying on the couch, instead on hunched over my laptop like I watched S1, and it is so, so pretty.

Date: 2012-05-29 08:58 pm (UTC)Someone made a wonderful point about how Sansa is basically born to be Queen with how she handles Cersei running off and taking care of the scared people, whil Cersei keeps trying to be King. And there's really nothing wrong with that, but it's a wonderful observation of their characters and the gender roles of suck in Westeros.

I purchased the S1 Blu-Rays, but Dad currently has a subscription to HBO and a giant assed TV that's got the clearest screen ever so it's really difficult not to be sleep deprived and watch it there. If only I could call in "Winter is Coming" sick to work.
I think from this episode alone I'll have to own the S2 BluRays, but heavens were they pushing it this season with some of their ridiculousness.
If only GRRM could have written an episode with Cat in it.

In this, the show is mirroring my experience of first reading the books. Moments of inspired genius, broken up by moments of I don't know what you people are smoking, but the street value must be phenomenal.

Date: 2012-05-31 02:41 pm (UTC)In any case, I've heard stories about two Dothraki actors being written off for RL reasons, but the show killed off most of Dany's remaining tribe. That's definitely a writing decision, and I don't know where they were going with that, and won't know until the story arc plays out or until I read an interview with people who worked on the show talking about it.

Date: 2012-05-29 08:21 pm (UTC)Ugh, if there is anyone left still debating if Lena Headey was the right choice for Cersei after this episode...I wouldn't know how to talk to those people. She was PHENOMENAL in this! I've actually loved everything the show has done with Cersei so far but that scene with Tommen...BEST EVER! I shall gather ALL THE AWARDS and hold them until Lena arrives.
SANSA! That scene with Joffrey and Tyrion...♥ ♥ ♥ And the look on Tyrion's face as she walks away...He LOVES all Sansa's moments of PWNage, doesn't he?
And I too liked the Sansa/Hound scene, though without the sexualized element, I'm not really sure why the Hound wants to help Sansa? Does he just genuinely care for her? Or is it more like he knows he can use her to his advantage at some point? I'm guessing a bit of both but I'm not sure if the show really made that explicit.
FINALE NEXT WEEK!!! And we'd better get an answer as to what happened to Doreah, show. Preferably one that reunites her with Dany.

Date: 2012-05-29 09:00 pm (UTC)I wasn't sure it was every that sexualized in the books (I mean, it was, but I meant his motivations). I think he sees her as many see her, as an idol of goodness and what he wants to be and wants to have and acquire, rather than a person. The problem being that when these people come to know Sansa as a person, they realize she's better than their fantasy.
Or at least that's how it goes in my head if any of those idiots would ever take the time to get to know her.
(Also WHO would ever question Lena Headey???)

Date: 2012-05-29 09:07 pm (UTC)I'm also not sure of Sandor's motives in that scene, also not entirely sure why Sansa didn't go with him. Then again, I'll take a little ambiguity over the sense I got from the books that he'd gone there with the intention of raping her and just changed his mind at the last minute. Also the reason I can't ship Sansa/Sandor, even in some distant future point.
I'm practically certain we'll see Doreah again, otherwise why have Dany's line about being unable to find her, why not just go, Oh, and Doreah's dead too? I am slightly concerned that she might have been complicit in the dragon-napping, because having her betray Dany would fit in with the theme of stripping Dany of her support network that the show's had going this season.

Yes, this.
Ugh, I hope Doreah wasn't involved. I hope the House of the Undying people just kidnapped her to try and keep the dragons under control. ITA that it'd fit with what the show is going for but I'd really just like to have at least one more face we recognize around Dany next season. Plus, you know...I'm hoping they'll give Irri's later scenes to Doreah, thus making Dany/Doreah canon :)
