The Only Water in the Forest is the River

netgirl_y2kI have watched Doctor Who. Twice. And I have managed to construct some thoughts more in depth than: eeeeeeeeeeeee!
-I am oddly unsurprised by River turning out to be Amy and Rory's daughter. Partly because I'd seen more than one theory along those lines and partly because, well, River Song/Melody Pond... it's not plumbing the depths of subtlety, is it? But, actually, on reflection I think I like it. It gives River a relationship with Amy and Rory, which I think she needed as I was becoming increasingly discomfited by how more and more her life seemed to revolve entirely around the Doctor. It answers the Who Is River Song question while, actually leaving us with the more interesting questions. Why is she in Stormcage? Why do they let her come and go like it's a holiday camp? Does it have anything to do with her being used as a weapon against the Doctor? How in the hells is this going to play out in the second half of the series? How Time Lord is she really?
-Ooh, theory! Because I have been trying to fanwank my way out of River's death in the library episodes for ages. It was Alex Kingston!River that lived on inside the computer (like Handy in Pete's World) while out in the real world River regenerated into a new body. Eh?
-That said, I don't think Moffat has been planning this for as long as he'd have us believe. See, River's total lack of a reaction to meeting Amy in S5, she reacted more to meeting Donna. I mean there's playing it cool and then there's playing it like it wasn't even in the script.
-I loved loved loved the Sontaran nurse. There's been a lot of discussion in fandom this series about what the Doctor would or wouldn't do, which is a stupid argument, not because of anything anyone's said but because we're all massively at cross purposes. When we say, well my Doctor... we're all talking about a slightly different character. But making a Sontaran work as a nurse, that's completely something My Doctor would do. I also liked that he was quite into being a nurse by the end, because that's something else Doctor Who means to me, the Doctor is someone who will make you overcome your baser nature and be better than you were.
- I know everyone else has said much the same thing, but: INTERSPECIES VICTORIAN LESBIAN CRIMEFIGHTING DUO FTW! Can we have all the fic, pls, and possibly a spin off. Best bit of the episode: "I don't know why you put up with me. btw, can I draw your attention to my prehensile tongue."
-I would also take fic about the Doctor and Awesome Silurian Lady, because there's obviously quite a bit of history there.
-"We're the thin fat gay married marines, why would we need names?" Welcome back, gay agenda!
-This episode was full of many, many shiny things. Which unfortunately made it all the more obvious that everything between the opening two parter and this has been filler. Although possibly I'm just bitter that not one of those filler episodes was used to set up how Awesome Silurian Lady or Awesome Sontaran Nurse came to be in the Doctor's debt. And I seriously hope that there's some behind the scenes BBC budgetary reason for splitting the series in two, otherwise it's just stupid.
-To end on a cheerier note, the first episode in the autumn is called Let's Kill Hitler. Okay, Doctor!
-And now, I shall be off to watch fandom explode and wait for my Interspecies Victorian Lesbian Crimefighters fic. In your own time, fandom.
