In future times of darkness or strife I think I will take comfort from the fact that I am not UK prime minister (at time of writing) Liz Truss. I mean, if Liz Truss were a person who engendered any sense of human empathy or sympathy I might actually feel a bit sorry for her (she's not, so I don't) because how do you ever recover from this level of personal and professional humiliation.

I think if I were Truss this would be the point where I'd try to rejoin the Lib Dems and pretend like this had all been a two decade long deep cover operation to infiltrate the Conservative party and destroy it from within, because, like, how else are you going to style it out at this juncture.

I am a bit annoyed that the government keeps threatening to collapse on days when I'm trying to concentrate on writing fic (my new modus operandi is to write nothing all year, and then 20k of edited fics in the six weeks that ficinabox and femslashex overlap *gulp*.)

And, like, can the government not just get on with collapsing. I don't have time to keep up with this, I have to come up with scenarios for the fictional ladies who live in my head to kiss.

If this was a long con, it was a really effective one! That's a great master plan right there.

I also wish things would stop collapsing so I could concentrate on shiny things instead. Can my government please stop trying to take away voting and reproductive rights so I can write in peace?!

Like, obviously Liz Truss is not a secret Lib Dem. But also, were I a highly committed young opposition member, who was willing to sacrifice my twenties and thirties pretending to be hard right and infiltrating the Tories in order to undermine them from within, this is exactly how I would have done it.

Can things just be normal, for a bit, please?

The news agenda has been swinging wildly over the last fortnight between, absolutely hee-haw happening and ‘is the government going to collapse today’? I for one am very tired of this nonsense. I’d kind of like a general election just so we can actually know what’s happening, but also I’d really hate another Xmas election - 2019 was a really bad time.

I swing between thinking that the Tories will never let an election happen with the polls this bad, even if it means they have to parachute in a new unelected leader every fortnight for the next two years, and thinking that maybe, just maybe, Truss is mad enough to bring the whole house of cards crashing down.
