Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. I knew Oberyn's death was coming, but I imagine if you were watching unspoiled that was, like, a Red Wedding level of shock. Actually, more so for me, because even though I knew it was coming I was totally unprepared for how viscerally horrible it was going to be. So now I'm stuck halfway between oh, my sweet, swaggering prince and don't get close enough to let him grab you! what are you, stupid!?
I am extremely excited that apparently they are filming in Spain next year and casting for the Sand Snakes. By the way, the fact that we're getting Dorne next season, and we haven't been back to Pyke for more than one scene since S2, I think confirms my opinion that the Dornish stuff is relevant to the larger plot, and the Greyjoy uncles are a giant narrative cul-de-sac who exist only to bore me as they annoy me.
I can only assume that they had some nine minute set piece planned for this episode, and at a late stage the CGI wasn't ready -- so at the last minute they replaced it with nine minutes of Peter Dinklage talking about beetles and doing borderline offensive impressions of the mentally handicapped. I certainly can't think of a better reason for that scene.
I've seen the argument that Ygritte sparing Gilly was ooc, but I thought it was a) a nice moment, and b) humanised the Wildlings, who have been latterly seen roasting peasants on a spit.
Ditto, I think Missandei and Grey Worm is a sweet romance, and hardly the worst offence the show has commited vis-a-vis female nudity.
In other news, Sansa is now a Sith Lord. Don't get me wrong, I loved Sansa's moment of overt manipulation; she was long overdue for a new costume, and Sophie Turner was looking good in it... but it's not exactly subtle, is it? I'm not sure that Littlefinger is the ally I would have chosen, but I get Sansa's logic - at least she knows he's untrustworthy, she can't be let down on that front again. Better the devil you know and all that.

Date: 2014-06-04 11:43 am (UTC)Oh, I think Missandei and Grey Worm are lovely. Although I'm not blind to the irony of a show as bad about female nudity and the male gaze as Game of Thrones choosing to portray a sweet romance by having Grey Worm sweetly apologise for seeing Missandei naked.
