28 YEARS LATER: an undeserved hate

Some days ago, I went to the cinema with some friends to watch 28 years later. Although I didn't watch the first two movies I really enjoyed 28 Y. L., mainly the cinematographic and soundtrack part.

However, I saw people hating this movie for the ending or the last half. The ending of 28 Y. L. is not an ending, but a connector to the next part. It's like REC 1 ending, where the final scene of Angela Vidal getting pulled to the darkness serves as a connector to REC 2. Then, I don't think the last half was that bad. It wasn't as good as the first one, but it invites to reflexion. Erik's attitude to the people who are 30 years behind on technology and the "memento mori" thing are really interesting.

What do you think?

I just watched it for the first time yesterday and I was absolutely pleasantly surprised, I’m not a huge fan of found footage stuff especially when it’s a foreign film (minus quarantine which is a 10/10). But I was kinda vibing through the first hour of the movie like yeah he’s weird and he don’t deserve what he’s getting and then came the phone call scenes with him talking to his producers who refuse to help and then his mom about the fact he’s wanted by police and the slow psychotic break he experiences was phenomenal. But the icing on the cake was the final arc I had my jaw gaped the entire time I was floored by how grim and chilling it was. I’m floored by how good this movie is overall

Just watched this. Was a pretty fun flick ! Highly recommend. Not that big on gore or big jump scares, but the story was pretty cool ! Maybe a sequel with kids killing more of the people associated with the camps ?

Family resemblances are complicated

via [personal profile] oursin, something I found interesting: We still don't understand family resemblance, and some of what we thought we knew is mistaken, or might be.

This article describes research that used data from almost a million people: every Norwegian student who took a standardized test from 2007-2019.

Quoting the article: "The resemblance of twins cannot be reconciled with any model....The resemblance of adoptees cannot be reconciled with any model."

Adjusting a model to account better for twins makes it a poorer match of adoptive relationships, and vice versa. Any attempt to account for one of these moves the model away adopted siblings makes it fit twins less well, and vice versa.

I went through a round of email purging. 3k+ emails in one category have gone to within 2k.

Over the next year or so I'd like to clean up old emails until everything that is needed/desired is in its own folder, and everything else has been deleted.

Looking For suggestions.

I've watched a lot of disturbing films. Recently been working my way through a24 horror movies. But nothing ha Really disturbed me since the Exorcist when I was like 10 yo. I recently watched bring her back, it was good, but in my opinion "talk to me' was better. Japanese horror is brutal (ichi the killer is an all time favorite).

But I have 2 conditions. It must be rentable on YouTube and it must be in English (due to recent eye problems, I can't read the captions well.

If your familiar with "Ichi the killer" I'm looking for that kinda level. Your help is much appreciated.

Remember 1 has to be rentable on YouTube 2 must be in English or dubbed. Thanks in advance.

About Me/Other Info: I'm a French guy who's constantly trying to post more on this website, and right now what my brain craves is more activity on my Reading page. o7 I'm participating in [community profile] sunshine_revival which has been helping with the posting, but my Reading page is pretty slow and I'd really like to get more people on there so we can all post alongside each other. Or something. I'm mostly looking for people who post about fandom stuff, but the actual fandom isn't super important to me (though if we have fandoms in common, that's great!) I'm more into the vibe of shared enthusiasm/passion, you know? I'll show you the little (size neutral) guys (gender neutral) that make my heart soar, you'll show me yours. That sort of stuff.

Main Fandom: My main fandom is Pokémon, specifically Pokémon X&Y. It's been my ride or die for over a decade now, though I've been a general/more casual Pokémon enjoyer since 1999. I love the creatures (all generations, though I don't know the ScaVio ones very well yet) and I love the characters (especially the Kalosian ones, but my heart is open to most of them.) In general, I'm largely into the games, and not so much into the rest, but that doesn't mean I dislike it.
Other Fandoms: Non-exhaustive list, because I can never remember what I like: .flow, A Series of Unfortunate Events (books & show), Ace Attorney, Amphibia, Animal Crossing, Arcane, Assassin's Creed (mostly Unity), BEASTARS, Far Cry 4, Final Fantasy (7, 9, 15), James Bond (Craig era), The Legend of Zelda, Minecraft, Mob Psycho 100, Petscop, Pokémon GO, Portal (1&2), Severance, Silent Hill (2&4), Sonic the Hedgehog (games & movies), Squid Game, Star Wars (movies), Stardew Valley, Super Paper Mario, Tales of Symphonia, Undertale/Deltarune, Vocaloid, Yakuza/Like a Dragon, Yume Nikki, Yuppie Psycho.
OTPs and Ships: My OTP is Professor Sycamore/Lysandre from Pokémon X&Y! Unbeatable! Number one forever! On my death bed I will be thinking about them! Other than that, here's a selection of ships I've been into in the last few years: Redd/Nook (Animal Crossing) Sade/Arno (Assassin's Creed) Ibuki/Louis (BEASTARS) Ganondorf/Link/Zelda (The Legend of Zelda) Serizawa/Touichirou (Mob Psycho 100) Eusine/Morty, Serena/Shauna, almost any male character/Lysandre (Pokémon) In-ho/Gi-hun (Squid Game) Zelos/Regal (Tales of Symphonia) Tachibana/Oda, Majima/Nishiki (Yakuza/Like a Dragon)

Fannish Activities: I draw and write! This year has rendered me a bit too swamped to do much of either (I haven't written anything in months and I miss it a lot) but these are my two main fannish endeavors. I also frequently participate in events (mostly exchanges, but not always) and sometimes even mod/host them. I also have a (WIP) fansite for Pokémon X&Y!
Non-Fannish Interests: Right now, I'm super into webdev and web design. I also like and am curious about all kinds of arts and crafts (trying to get back into sculpting and painting lately, also picked up cross-stitching through one of my partners.) I miss taking long walks around a lake, and I love animals (I have two cats!) I also enjoy washing the dishes...

Don't get me wrong. I loved both movies. But I really felt like Smile 1 was so much better. In fact, it's the first horror movie in a long time that I feel like just hit everything I loved about horror. Smile 2 was good as well but... I just felt like Smile 1 was on another level.

I know the general sentiment in every genre is that the first movie/season is usually the best, but I know that's not always the case. I was hoping that Smile 2 would've been a lot better, but I felt like it couldn't hold a candle to the original.

That said, I'm holding out hope for a Smile 3. I know that in the first one they specifically showed her sister's kid witnessing the entity walk up to her car and clearly seeing the whole transaction and being freaked out by it. So I'm hoping that there's a follow-up with that and he eventually ends up investigating it himself when he's older.

But we'll see. Either way, I'm a fan of both movies and look forward to seeing what is produced next!

Edit: Okay so, people have some super strong feelings about the way I felt regarding the scene that was framed to the kid... Again, it was just my opinion, but based on the downvotes those comments are getting I'll have to concede on this topic. It doesn't match the lore for him to see it... I just thought he did in my mind.

Man, you know, admittedly, for once it's nice to get downvoted to oblivion for something not related to politics... gotta admit. Like, I'm not even mad about it lol.

Edit 3: Wow, was not expecting this much of a response and discussion but I'm loving it!

Superman (2025)

Jul. 12th, 2025 05:49 pm
lirazel: Lead couple from Healer ([tv] lois and clark)
[personal profile] lirazel
I saw Superman! I liked it a lot!

Positive stuff:

+ Finally, a superhero movie that cares about every single life! I did not think we would ever see such a thing--superhero movies use "collateral damage" to raise stakes while not actually caring about the people who die. But this movie cares because Superman cares. And I love that so very very very much. Even if it hadn't done anything else, I would have thought it a success for that.

+ Honestly, Superman is my favorite superhero because he's so ridiculously good and decent, and this movie gets that. It's earnest and sincere and isn't winking at you but it also isn't saccharine--it knows that it can be HARD to be good, and intentions aren't everything.

+ Top tier casting. Everyone is doing a fantastic job. Corsenswet, Brosnahan, and Hoult ARE their characters. They were just as good as I hoped, but I was not expecting how much I would love Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.

+ This movie loves the relationship between Clark and Lois, which means that this movie has good taste. Their chemistry is lovely and the scene where they're doing the interview is probably my favorite scene in the whole thing.

+ Lex is realistically evil in a way that many of our real billionaires are, which I appreciated a lot. His motivations are completely foreign to me, but I only have to look at the real world to see that there are really people who are like that.

+ The twist involving Superman's backstory was so ridiculously good and meaty. A really bold writing choice, but a great one.

+ I thought the pacing was really good! It never felt like it lagged!

+ Everything was bright! You could see what was going on even in the dark scenes!

+ Lots and lots of fun details that made it feel like the people who were making the movie were having fun making it.

+ Krypto!

Mixed stuff:

+ Being a rabid John Williams fan, I was delighted that they adapted his Superman theme for the film, but I really wish we had gotten just one scene where they used the full-throated original. None of the music was that level of thrilling.

+ I could have done with a lot more Clark at the Daily Planet, living his normal life, letting us get to know the Daily Planet people. The action scenes were very good action scenes, but as always in an action movie, I want way more of characters interacting. Imagine how much more Clark & Lois we could have had! However, I understand that the masses do not share my taste so I get why there wasn't more of that, and there was enough that I'm not angry about it.

+ The plot could have been better. It wasn't bad, and it provided a fine backdrop and set piece for the characters to show who they are, but I didn't love it, you know?

+ #teamsomebodyloveeve

+ I wish we'd had a smidge more showing us how Lex inspires loyalty in other people. I mean, yes, in real life, there are a bunch of people who will follow a billionaire that they think is smart without thinking about his morality at all. It's very realistic! but I want to know about this specific dynamic. Is he paying them obscene amounts of money? What is his view of the world that he could convince the engineer to do what she did to her own body?

Negative stuff:

+ Okay, what was the Kents' accents???? If the movie had been set in Alabama, sure, that would be reasonable, but I do not believe that people in Kansas talk like that? Nobody Iw've ever known from Kansas talks like that? It’s so weird how media uses "very southern accent" as stand-in for "country" even when the country the people are from is the Midwest.

If you are from Kansas and I am wrong about how people talk there, please tell me so I can stop being annoyed about this.

[as an aside, Mister Terrific's accent was so lovely that I immediately looked to see where Gathegi grew up, and to my shock found he grew up in California! I would never have guessed it! His southern accent was so realistic! Well done, sir!]

Me trying to work out the geography of these made up countries: ??????? The one is clearly Russia, the other is inspired by Pakistan, Afghanistan, or possibly a province of India, yet we're told this is all happening in Europe. Which makes no sense. Russia is half in Asia, it would have made so much more sense to just say Asia instead????

But my complaints are small.

So yeah! A fun movie! I recommend it even if, like me, you're not such a big superhero person and are exhausted by too many superheroes.

Now can we pretty please have a prequel movie about how Clark and Lois met and how she found out he's Superman???????

Just before waking dream of being at the daycare/ a daycare, two very large rooms, one for babies and the other- where I had my shift-- for toddlers. But I was early and spent my time holding a four or five month old baby. My suster was also working there and when I realized that, I thought I could have asked her to take my shift, but she'd left by then. Still, nice to be among kids again.

Hydro bill came in today, something ridiculous like $14 because I overpay in the warm months. I'd been expecting to be dinged a good $100 even with overpaying, but then reminded myself that June was cool-- and then reminded myself again that the last ten days of it were anything but-- that was when we had the heat dome-- and I'd certainly run the fans and AC a lot then.  So I overpaid again because the nights are still not cool enough for just a window fan. July is a hot month, period.

Though when I woke this morning the room was, if not warm, at least not as cool as the 18C/ 65F I'd set the AC for. But that was because the curtain had fallen back across the unit as a result of my midnight thrashing about, I assume. Must anchor it better in future.

Otherwise I sit indoors and read Stone and Sky, very pleasantly, though whether it will stay pleasant with the North Sea oil shenanigans remains to be seen.

I dreamed of taking a transcontinental train with as little difficulty as traveling to D.C., which I am not convinced has been the state of American rail for decades. Otherwise since my sleep has gone principally to hell again, I feel burnt and friable and past my last fingernail of whatever I am supposed to be doing. On the one hand we are a communal species; on the other I would like to feel I had any right to exist beyond what other people require of me.

I am relieved to see that the enraging article I read last night about the deep-sixing of Yiddish at Brandeis has since been amended to a reduced but not eradicated schedule, but it would have been best to leave the program undisturbed to begin with. The golem reference is apropos.

My formative Joan D. Vinge was Psion (1982/2007), which even in its bowdlerized YA version may have been my introductory super-corporatized dystopia, but I had recent occasion to recommend her Heaven Chronicles (1991), which I got off my parents' shelves in high school and whose first novella especially has retained its importance over the years, of holding on to the true things—like one another—even in the face of an apparently guaranteed dead-end future, the immutably cold equations of its chamber space opera which differ not all that much from the hot ones of our planetside reality show. Not Pyrrhically or ironically, it chimed with the other stories I had grown up hearing.

Jamaica Run (1953) is an inexplicably lackadaisical film for such sensational components as sunken treasure, inheritance murder, and a deteriorated sugar plantation climactically burning down on schedule of Caribbean Gothic, but it did cheer me that Wendell Corey unerringly features as my obvious favorite character, the heroine's ne'er-do-well brother whose landed airs don't cover his bar tab and whose intentions toward the ingenue of a newly discovered heir may be self-surprised sincere romance or just hunting his own former fortune, swanning around afternoons in a dressing gown and getting away with most of the screenplay's sarcasm: "What is this, open house for disagreeable people?"

I cannot yet produce photographic evidence, but the robin's eggs in the rhododendron beside the summer kitchen have hatched into open-mouthed nestlings. A dozen infant caterpillars are tunneling busily through the milkweed.

Weeks are about to get even fuller with a summer class and impending semester. The main point of progress this week was clearing out the fridge, and cleaning the handwash-only dishes in the sink. (Dishwasher FTW, it keeps things so much more manageable.)

These are some things that have helped with preventing clutter in the first place:

1. No-buy rules on craft projects. The current in-progress shirt gets finished, THEN the next project in queue, and new fabric (fabric samples included) only happens if it is being picked out for a specific, immediate project.

2. Only one craft project out at a time, and it lives on the coffee table. Keeps the mess consolidated and easier to clean.

3. Trying to maintain a schedule. Recycling goes out on Monday or Tuesday, which is the same day as big errands (car refilling, groceries). One day between Friday and Monday is for housekeeping tasks - sweeping/vacuuming, cleaning, putting things away.

4. Dedicated days off. No working, paid or otherwise. Housework counts as working. This lets the energy bar go back up so it's not a continuous struggle on low-energy weeks to keep things tidy.

... But things still get overlooked and hectic. Some tasks get postphoned because of weather or fatigue.

So here are the general goals to hit next week.

1. All of the glass recycling (minus lightbulbs) taken out.
2. Thing 1 and Thing 2 mailed off.
3. Big box of donations taken to a donation drop.

These tasks have been pending for several weeks, so it would be nice to see them off.

How do you guys celebrate spooky season?

Personally, I don’t really have. I guess you could say a tradition. We moved recently and there’s no cable box for my TV. So it looks like I won’t be watching horror films on my TV unless we upgrade my TV or something. However, I have a huge collection of horror movies on DVDs so I’m going to be watching that this year since my Blu-ray player works. Friday the 3th, scream, FNaF, resident evil etc. probably play my horror games, outlast, FNaF, dbd etc. maybe have some candy on the 31st. Maybe watch ton of scary videos on YouTube. I would try new horror films, but I’m trying to save up for a convention to meet Matthew Lillard ( movie William afton. ) since William Afton from the five nights at Freddy’s franchise has always been my favorite character in the world since I was 14 before I turned 15 in March 2015. Use my favorite character since January after the second game came out, but before the third was confirmed ( I’m 25 now. ). So I don’t really have the money to do that because my family is poor. I should have what I need by the end of the year and if he doesn’t come back to planet con next year since he came back too soon to meet him this year, I’m going to be adding money here in there trying to get 2,500 but if he does come back early, I should have enough to meet him. I have to wait and see how it goes. Besides, I have to buy a bunch of other stuff, but I am going to be getting the second five nights at Freddy’s movie along with scream seven next year.

Sorry if I got off topic, but I really don’t have a tradition. It’s just watch as much scary content as possible and just have some candy.
