I tripped over the dog coming down the stairs yesterday morning and have done something unwise to my ankle. I also landed on the dog, so he's having a bit of a sulk and ignoring me. Still in full on Yay Christmas! mode, though.

Anyway as I'm laid up and doing end-of year round up posts anyway, that meme where you talk about the fic you wrote through the year.

Leitmotif(s) of the year:

Feminist meta cunningly disguised as A Song of Ice and Fire fanfiction. Morgana, and what is a Merlin canon? Oodles of femslash. Titles that have little if anything to do with the actual story. Motherhood, of actual babies as well as baby dragons. Wolves, a lot of wolves.

My best story of this year:

I think my A Song and Ice and Fire fic is my best. Which is odd, actually, because until recently I would have said my strengths were in comedy and crackfic, and ASOIAF is not a fandom where you really get to exercise those writing muscles much. I guess I've developed different muscles.

I still think the The Reluctant Queen is awfully good, and The Wolves of Winterfell has some interesting symmetry and imagery, things I'd only been familiar with from other people's writing before.

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.

Either The Trouble with Witches (at least the evil get to go home early on Fridays) or Through the Looking Glass, Darkly.

Writing Morgana still delights me, which is an interesting counterpoint to how the rest of Merlin makes me feel, but I've made my peace with that. Once and future favourite character, and all that.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.

I think you can split the difference between The Sides and All the Corners and Everything But the Kitchen Sink.

It turns out there's an audience for OUaT femslash and funny Doctor Who fic. Which is good to know, really, as those are two things I'm pretty sure I'll be writing more of.

Story of mine most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:

As I was writing Despoiled (the hunting for witches remix) I knew it was going to sink like a stone. Porny, incestuous het in Merlin fandom? Yeah, no. So I wasn't surprised, but I still think it's better than the kudos count makes it seem.

Story that could have been better?

I don't know about specifically better, I mean, hell, they could all be better in one way or another.

But there some that do feel should have been longer. If I'd had more time, and, well, been a totally different writer They Took Some Honey, And Plenty of Money would have been the opening to a much longer fic about Brienne, Asha and Arya's quest to rescue Sansa from the Vale. And some, like They Will Crown You, They Will Take Your Legs, are perfectly sound ideas, but read more like the outline of a fic rather than a complete one.

Most fun story to write:

Through the Looking Glass, Darkly. Morgana and Regina hanging out and bitching about the downsides of being their respective canon's designated villain, that is the stuff of my id.

Sexiest story?

One second while I find a story where the characters actually fuck. Oh! Sansa and Margaery do in Every Rose Has a Thorn (and even tame wolves bite). Well, mostly they lounge around naked in bed while I try to keep my meta-ing on the place of women in the ASOIAF-verse in character. Still.

Hardest story to write:

The Women Kings. It's a problem I've come up against in multifandom exchanges before, matching on Game of Thrones with someone where I can't tell if they've read the books or are open to spoilers.

There's a tendency in the corners of fandom that I hang out in to assume that even people who are only watching the show have spoiled themselves to fuck for the sake of participation in fandom and avoiding later trauma. But, still, you don't want someone reading a gift fic and going: WAIT, WHO DIED!?

It didn't help that the requested pairing was Sansa/Margaery, which is a pairing I do ship but only in the future. Margaery is using Sansa, and I can only see it working in some future where Sansa is older and savvy enough not to care and to use her straight back.

Easiest story to write?

Everything But the Kitchen Sink, partly because writing Doctor Who is like slipping on an old pair of comfortable slippers, and partly because Oswin Oswald? Most distinctive and easily imitated speech patterns since Donna Noble.

Where did you publish/archive your stories?

AO3, just. Although earlier I was posting a bunch of them backdated on my journals, and fuck I'd forgotten what a time consuming pain in the neck that is. AO3's posting interface has spoiled me.

I fucking love kudos, and on consideration I do think just how easy it is to archive there is a fair trade for the drop off in comments, but it does mean that I jump on what comments I do get there like an overenthusiastic labrador retriever.

Story I haven't yet written, but intend to:

What Aurora and Mulan did next (fell in love). You know how I can't write ASOIAF fic without talking about feminism, I don't think I'm going to be able to write OUaT without digressing into how true love isn't the only kind of love.

AU where Asha was the Greyjoy held hostage at Winterfell, possibly Asha/Sansa I haven't properly decided yet.

Giant interconnected series of AUs about all the past and future and possible and unlikely queens of Westeros. This is going to be my "long fic isn't so scary" project.

Bo/Lauren fic about the difficulties of a human trying to have an adult, committed relationship with a functionally immortal sex demon, funnier than it sounds.

Some manner of celebratory/fix-it "canon is over and you can't make it any worse, ha ha" Morgana fic.
