There were things about it that were good, even. The writing was brisk and easy reading in that YA way, and the way the protagonist thought about her bound feet was visceral - but even that just lamp shaded how shallow the Empress Wu gimmick was, because why would foot binding even be a thing in this future sci-fi world with mechs?
