After clapping myself on the back for having learned how to cook during lockdown, just in the last week I have cooked my dinner in bad lighting and scoffed half a chicken burger before realising that it wasn't cooked in the middle, had to throw out a giant bulk bought bag of rice because I hadn't been storing it properly and it had gone blue and mouldy, and melted my rice cooker. Fuck it, I'm ordering pizza for tea tonight.
While I wait for it to be delivered I shall do this A03 meme, because I have been thinking about writing lately. I have signed up for
remixrevival which is always one of my favourite things, and am strongly considering
ficinabox although I suspect that might be a little bit of unjustified optimism on my part.
1) How many works do you have on AO3?
236. I want to get to 250 because that is a pleasingly round number to me.
2) What’s your total AO3 word count?
549,763 over twelve years.
3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
35, otherwise known as too many to list here.
4) What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
the one where i accidentally predicted that peggy and angie would end up living together at the end of s1
the one where sansa and margaery get gay married in the canon timeline
that one eleven and wee!amelia fic i wrote before i realised that i was never going to warm to eleven
a really generic sansa/margaery modern au that i had honestly forgotten i'd written
that sansa/dany one where...LOOK, I LIKE SOULMARKS, OKAY
5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
I try to. I go through phases where I reply to everyone, and other times where things have gotten away from me and I feel like too much time has passed, or I feel silly typing 'thank you, buddy' twelve times in a row, or there's one weird comment and I don't feel like I can reply to the nice ones without engaging with the bad faith one, or I haven't responded to comments on this one fic for a while and starting again now feels mean to the commentators I didn't respond to.
Now, given that this is how my brain spirals when it comes to fic comments you may well ask: Gillian, how do you function in normal human society?
And the answer is: while medicated and with great difficulty.
6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
probably the one where margaery honeypots sansa into being an unwilling accomplice to murder
7) What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Probably any of the numerous fics I've written where the dead ladies of ASOIAF (Elia, Lyanna, Ashara, etc.) make it out alive, because fuck you, that's why.
8) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
Not for ages. Doctor Who was actually a great fandom for crossovers, because you could just go: 'they've gone there in the TARDIS.'
9) Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Once, and it was super weird because it was during the during the anon period of an exchange so I couldn't respond, and then by the time I could respond they were eleven comments deep into this argument that only existed in their own head and it was like...you clearly care about this more than I ever will, so I'm just going to delete and let you go be weird in your own space.
10) Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I certainly don't write it well.
11) Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yonks ago, in Buffy fandom. But the person was really blatant about it, and stole fic from loads of people, including some pretty big name fans, so they were caught and publicly smacked down almost immediately.
12) Have you ever had a fic translated?
It happens semi-regularly. Russian and Chinese, mostly. It is super cool.
13) Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Nope, but I'd be up for it. Especially if it was with a podcaster or an artist or something.
14) What’s your all time favorite ship?
At the moment, I am a fandom butterfly.
15) What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
None. A couple of years ago I had a brain hiccup, and they only way I was going to be able to write anything ever again was going to be to ditch everything I'd been working on and give myself permission to start with a clean sheet.
I do feel guilty about it, because cool people had been promised things, but it was either that or permanent paralysis.
16) What are your writing strengths?
Tugging at the threads of a canon divergence AU until I get to something really cool.
Pithiness.
17) What are your writing weaknesses?
Sex scenes.
Action scenes.
Original characters and settings.
Correct use of the semi-colon.
18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
If it's a language you speak, have at it. If you don't, don't.
19) What was the first fandom you wrote for?
You know, it was so long ago now that I honestly don't remember if it was Harry Potter or Buffy.
20) What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
My opinion on Merlin is obviously now that it should get in the bin and stay there, but I still have a lot of affection for this post-series gwen & morgana fic i wrote working through my feelings.
And, hey, that's my pizza!
