I agree with your critique, but it was the first book by Hill that I'd read and I liked it enough/was impressed enough that I now want to read more of his. So thanks for your recs below! The novella collection also sounds good.
The Fireman is a very direct response to The Stand so I also found it interesting on that level. It's sort of "What if the apocalypse was different, Frannie was the main character, and it was more accurate about being deaf?" I did find the specifics of the apocalypse very cool though I had some logical quibbles with it.
