Glad to see an opinion of A Princess in Theory, which I picked up exactly because the cover looked like the Black Panther characters a bit reworked to fit the romance model. The writing really carried me along, and I especially loved Likotsi from the first. You're right, though, that it didn't tie the two halves together, which would have meant (say) a more involved medical and political plot in the second half so Naledi could get her degree in a blaze of glory and Thabiso could negotiate other mining contracts. Alas, a romance is not a medical-techno suspense thriller.
