My impression had been that the showrunners had been trying to give the impression that Lexa might survive (not least by leaking that the actress was filming scenes for the finale) without actually ever saying so outright; dickish, yes, but not beyond the pale. Straight up lying casts the whole thing in a much less charitable light.

YES. It came out of nowhere and they will probably never be seen again, but I don't care because they were treated exactly the same as all the random het couples on this show; rushed storytelling, true love's kiss and all!
