I am undoubtedly far too close to the story to really recommend it, given I am the author, but I can say that I'm fairly sure that my Root/Shaw fic, Flowerpots and Trellises is not overly saccharine. It's not a total angstfest either; it's part fill-in-the-gaps version of season 3, part character study of Root, delving into her history. (Though, obviously, the effects of Root being tortured linger a little more in this story than they do in canon.) Not sure if this would be of interest, but I've had real problems reading other people's Root/Shaw fic, so.
