For all my complaining about how everything is a series, I could have spent so much more time with Maia; he was such a wonderful character, and I would have loved to see more of his sister and future empress.
On the other hand it was basically perfect as a stand alone. And SFF is plagued by authors and publishers who will flog the horse to death given half a chance.
