Amy Pond is also Scottish

I have spent much of the last few days in front of BBC news watching Liberal Democrats look as though they are about to burst into tears. So, that's been fun. Post-election I am also feeling quite good about being Scottish, despite the place being depressingly damp, lacking in a decent rugby team and largely inhabited by other Scottish people. The SNPs trouncing of all comers does mean that at some point over the next five years I will have to decide what I actually think about independence. It's not that I don't have thoughts about Scottish independence, I have many opinions and all of them are contradictory and bound up in identity politics and currently quite hard to separate from how much I hate the Westminster coalition.

Speaking of referendums, AV got decisively beaten, which is-- It's sad that the possibility of any kind of electoral reform has probably been tabled for a generation or so, but it's hard to care too much as despite my best efforts I found it nearly impossible to muster a single opinion about AV versus FPTP.

Anyway, enough of that, let's talk about Doctor Who.

-I LOVED THAT. I really, properly loved it. Then again, Amy was dressed up as pirate, waving a cutlass and swinging from the rigging, after that they'd of had to work bloody hard to make me not love it.

-AMY! She found the cutlass and then stopped to put on the coat and the hat. Fair do, Amy, I would have done the same thing.

-Rory! I love it when his nursing skills become relevant. And stoned Rory was hilarious. I couldn't say entirely why, but I'm enjoying Rory indescribably more than I did last series. I think it's how his and Amy's relationship has changed. In S5 there were points where it seemed half-hearted (Amy) or passive-aggressive (Rory) but now? Now they're The Ponds and I love them muchly.

-Eleventy! Walking the plank! Disregard all my previous theories! (way ahead of you, Doctor!") "It's intelligent, maybe we can reason with it." Hi, Doctor, hi!

-This is actually the first episode where I've really felt like Doctor Who is back. I still feel that kicking the series off with a two-parter, especially one as in many ways nonsensical as tIA/DotM, was a mis-step. It was also a relief to have an episode not penned by Moffat, I know there's a lot of love for Moff and a lot of it is greatly deserved, but sometimes I do want to pat his head in the manner of a small boy and say "Yes, you're very clever and we're all duly impressed, now can you just tell the story, please."

-Have I already mentioned the bit where Amy had a sword? I hope she's kept it.

Yes, The Ponds are making me so happy at the moment, especially in this episode. And Amy totally kept the entire pirate ensemble, because she's fabulous like that. :D

I so agree with you about Rory. I like him so much more these days! Toward the beginning of the episode when he gives the pirate captain a little thumbs up - that is just so - he is enjoying the ride as well as he can. <3 I also like the idea of his being a nurse being relevant, but then again his "kiss of life, just like on TV" did not seem very nurse-like or helpful to me. And I did not appreciate the silly drawn out death scene especially since it's only been two weeks since we watched Amy cry her eyes out over someone who's obviously not dead. So whatever, I guess I'm in a mood, but nevertheless, yay Rory! Yay Amy! Yay Eleventy!
