The Only Good Business Decision Disney Have Made Recently
I did all my Christmas shopping (gifts & food & bits) today during what felt like the fucking Purge. I have now returned home and immediately taken to drink* and put on Zack Snyder's latest movie: For Legal Purposes This Is Not A Star War.
*By which I mean I have opened the bottle of Baileys that has been in fridge since last week
We all agree that it was the protracted attempted rape scene in the first half hour that led Disney to take a hard pass on making this a Star Wars movie, yes? And then there's a boss fight at about the halfway mark with the Racnoss from the 2006 Doctor Who Christmas special and the tonal whiplash was just fucking absurd.
I saw the thing that Netflix might have cut down the movie to jumpstart their own version of 'release the Snydercut.' And, yeah, the movie has clearly been cut to shreds because other than Sofia Boutella's character, who even are any of these people? But, like, I have zero time for the Snyderverse bros, but at least that shit was organic.
I don't even hate Snyder as a director. I really rate Sucker Punch and thought Army of the Dead was a solid, fun time. I also thought all of the problems with his DC movies came from a fundamental misunderstanding of Superman - once you turn Superman into Batman, you have to turn Batman into Super Duper Extra Batman and then there's no salvaging the tone.
Anyway, I didn't hate Rebel Moon, but it very much had the vibe of a Syfy channel original movie that I might have watched in 2015.

The best use for Snyder, I think, is have him make his own weird, niche little projects off in a corner and hope every so often he throws up a Sucker Punch.
